Acropolis of Rhodes
Temple columns, a stadium and the best sunset in town.
On the hill of Monte Smith, west of the Old Town, lie the remains of the ancient city's acropolis. Unlike the one at Lindos, it was never a fortress: it was a place of temples, games and gardens.
What you'll see
- Restored columns of the Temple of Pythian Apollo
- The ancient stadium below it, its stone seats partly rebuilt
- A small marble odeon beside the stadium
When to go
Late afternoon. The hill looks west over the sea, and the sunset from the temple steps is one of the best in Rhodes Town. The hill is named after Sir Sidney Smith, a British admiral who kept watch on Napoleon's fleet from here.
