History/ ≈ 35 min from the villas
Ancient Kamiros
A whole ancient city, laid out in terraces above the sea.
Kamiros was one of the three great Dorian cities of ancient Rhodes, with Lindos and Ialysos. Unlike them, it was never built over. After earthquakes and the rise of the new city of Rhodes it was simply abandoned, and only rediscovered in the 19th century.
What you'll see
- Streets and the foundations of houses climbing the hillside
- The remains of a Doric temple and the agora below it
- A huge cistern from the 6th century BC at the top, which once held water for the whole town
- The sea, all the way up
Good to know
There's little shade, so go early or late. Afterwards, drive 15 minutes south to Kamiros Skala for fish by the harbour, then on to Kritinia castle for the view.
