Monolithos Castle
A knights' castle on a sheer rock, and the island's best sunset.
On the far west coast, the Knights of St John built a castle on top of a single rock rising more than 200 metres above the sea. Its name, Monolithos, means one stone.
Up top
A short path and steps lead up to the walls. Inside is the white chapel of Agios Panteleimon, with drops to the sea on three sides and a view out towards Chalki.
Below
A winding road leads down to Fourni, a quiet pebble beach with caves cut into the rock.
Good to know
About 50 minutes from the villas. Time it for sunset, and bring a torch for the steps down.
