Asklipio
A quiet hill village with a church painted floor to ceiling, and a castle above it.
Asklipio sits on a hill a few kilometres inland from Kiotari, in the quieter south of the island. Few visitors make the turn off the coast road, which is exactly why it's worth doing.
The church
The Byzantine church of the Dormition is covered inside with frescoes: stories from the Bible painted wall to wall and across the vaults, still vivid after centuries.
The castle
Above the village are the ruins of a castle the Knights of St John built to watch over this coast. Walk up for a view across the olive groves to the sea.
Good to know
Cover shoulders and knees for the church. Combine it with a swim at Kiotari or Gennadi on the coast below.
