Whitewashed houses of Lindos village

Lindos is a village of white houses below a rock crowned by an ancient acropolis. It's 25 minutes south of Kolympia and one of the most visited places on Rhodes, so timing is everything.

The acropolis

On top of the rock stand the columns of the sanctuary of Athena Lindia, inside walls the Knights of St John built around it. The climb takes fifteen to twenty minutes on uneven steps. There's an entrance fee and almost no shade.

A day in Lindos

  • Before nine: park above the village and climb while the stone is still cool
  • Late morning: wander down through the lanes, past captains' houses with pebble-mosaic courtyards
  • Midday: swim at St Paul's Bay or the main beach below the village
  • Afternoon: lunch on a roof terrace, then back to the villa before the evening crowds

Good to know

Cars stay outside the village. Wear proper shoes: the lanes and steps are polished smooth.
