What to eat on Rhodes
Chickpea fritters, honey and sesame, and the island's own spirit.
Rhodian food is Greek island cooking with a few specialities of its own. Look out for these.
- Pitaroudia: fritters of chickpeas or courgette with herbs, the island's favourite meze
- Melekouni: a bar of honey and toasted sesame, traditionally handed out at weddings and christenings
- Souma: a clear spirit distilled from grapes, poured in the wine villages
- Honey from Siana and the hills around it, thick with thyme
- Wines from Embonas: crisp Athiri whites and Mandilaria reds
- Fresh fish and octopus at the harbours of Stegna, Haraki and Kamiros Skala
